Your Garage Door and the Florida Wind Mitigation Discount

Florida law requires home insurers to offer a discount for wind-resistant construction - and your garage door is part of what gets inspected. Here's what's actually verified, and what isn't.

Not Insurance Advice

StormForge Garage Doors is not an insurance company, insurance agent, or licensed wind mitigation inspector. We do not determine insurance eligibility, perform the inspection, or know or guarantee what discount any individual homeowner will receive - that is decided entirely by your insurance carrier and a licensed inspector. This page explains the publicly available legal framework and points you to official sources; it is not insurance advice.

What Florida Law Actually Requires

Florida Statute 627.0629 requires that residential property insurance rate filings include "actuarially reasonable discounts, credits, or other rate differentials... for properties on which fixtures or construction techniques demonstrated to reduce the amount of loss in a windstorm have been installed or implemented." The statute explicitly lists "opening protection, and window, door, and skylight strength" as one of the categories insurers must factor in. That's the legal basis for the wind mitigation discount - it's a requirement on insurers, not a marketing claim from any contractor.

How the Discount Is Actually Determined

The discount itself is not a single fixed percentage set by the state - each insurance carrier files its own rate schedule with the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, and the amount varies by carrier. Florida's OIR requires every insurer to publish its own hurricane mitigation discounts on its website since October 1, 2023. That means the honest answer to "how much will I save" is: your insurer publishes that number, not us, and not any garage door company. Your insurance agent can tell you your carrier's specific figures.

The Inspection: OIR-B1-1802

The discount is claimed using a state-standardized form, the Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form (OIR-B1-1802), completed by a licensed inspector. The report is generally valid for up to five years, provided no material changes are made to the structure or inaccuracies are found. A garage door is one of the exterior openings assessed as part of that inspection - how it's classified can depend on its construction (for example, a solid door versus one with glass panels), which is determined by the inspector, not by us.

A Separate State Grant Program Also Exists

My Safe Florida Home is a separate, state-run program offering free inspections and grants toward hurricane-hardening improvements - but it has its own eligibility rules (income limits and other qualifications that have changed over time), so we won't state specific eligibility figures here. Check current eligibility and funding status directly at the official program site before assuming you qualify.

What StormForge Actually Does

We install and repair wind-rated and impact-rated garage doors built to current Florida Building Code requirements. A door that meets current wind-load standards is the kind of construction feature the statute above is describing. What we don't do: perform your wind mitigation inspection, work for or represent any insurance carrier, or promise a specific discount amount. If you want to pursue the discount, the practical path is: upgrade the door if it doesn't already meet current code, then schedule a wind mitigation inspection with a licensed inspector, who reports your actual result to your insurer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does StormForge determine if I qualify for a wind mitigation discount?

No. Eligibility and the discount amount are determined entirely by your insurance carrier, based on a licensed inspector's report. We install and repair wind-rated garage doors, which is one factor that inspection considers.

Q: How much will my insurance premium go down?

We can't tell you that number, and you should be skeptical of anyone who claims to know it without seeing your policy. Each insurance carrier files its own discount schedule with the state; your insurance agent can tell you your carrier's specific figures.

Q: Is a wind mitigation inspection the same as a garage door inspection from StormForge?

No. A wind mitigation inspection is a separate, licensed inspection covering your entire home (roof, walls, openings, and more) and is what your insurer requires to apply the discount. We can tell you whether your current door meets current wind-load code, but that's not a substitute for the official inspection.

Q: Do I have to replace my garage door to get the discount?

Not necessarily - if your existing door already meets current wind-load requirements, it may already qualify. An inspector determines this during the wind mitigation inspection, not us.

If your garage door doesn't currently meet Florida's wind-load requirements, that's the starting point before any inspection.
