Every garage door opener sold since the early 1990s is required to have a pair of photo-eye safety sensors mounted a few inches off the floor on each side of the door - an invisible infrared beam between them that the opener checks before it will close. It's a simple system, but it's also one of the most common reasons an otherwise healthy garage door suddenly refuses to close, because the sensors are mounted exactly where they're most likely to get bumped, misaligned, or blocked.
